Is Someone Watching You?
What is adware and spyware?
Generally, adware is any software application, which displays advertising banners while a program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which are viewed through pop-up windows or bars that appears on the computer screen. The justification for companies that develop this software is that it helps recover programming development costs and reduces the cost for the user.
Spyware is any technology that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge. On the Internet, spyware is referred to as “spybot” or tracking software. This software secretly gathers information about the user and relays it to advertisers or other interested parties. Spyware can be installed on a computer as a software virus or as the result of installing a new program.
Where does it come from?
Adware and spyware are often installed without the user’s consent as a “drive-by” download or as the result of clicking an option in a deceptive pop-up window. Unlike a pop-up download, which asks for permission, a “drive-by” download is carried out invisibly to the user. This type of download can be initiated by simply visiting a website or viewing an HTML e-mail message. It is also likely to become infected with malicious software (malware) as a result of downloading online games.
How do I remove it?
Many products on the market today claim to have everything you need to be completely spyware free. Some of the programs available are offered free for personal use; however, others may require a fee to have a valid license for the software. Several programs on the Web advertise pop-up stopping and spyware killing. However, it is only after you install these programs that you realize your problem just became larger. Not only are your original problems persisting, but new problems have also surfaced. You might be asking yourself, “So which program should I use to remove this stuff?” The first step in combating malicious software is using at least two efficient programs in conjunction with one another. The next step is consistent updating and diligent use of the programs.
Can it be prevented?
The root of the problem is not the annoying pop-ups or malicious websites that host malware, it is the lack of training by users with access to these malicious sites. If we can better educate users on how to avoid such websites and “drive-by” downloads, organizations can become more efficient with less down time. Computers are infected everyday with this type of software, so users must constantly be wary of the threats that dwell upon the Internet. Privacy depends upon the user and the steps taken to combat this ever-growing problem.
Spyware and adware will always be a part of the Internet. The only way to stay 100% free from spyware is to unplug your network cable. Unfortunately, companies cannot consider such an option. Therefore, it all boils down to training end-users to distinguish between safe and unsafe web surfing. Although problems may still arise, a safer web environment makes for a healthier computer.
